The many lenses of the diet world

These days it seems at though every man and his dog is trying to push a new diet fad on you: whether it is Atkins, Keto, Pescatarian, Fruitarian, Mediteranian, High Carb, Carnivore, Vegan , Vegetarian, Paleo and the list goes on. It’s hard to keep track of what we are ‘supposed to be eating’ . You can’t blame those who are confused, the news changes their mind frequently and social media is rife with conflicting arguments. What we should understand first and foremost is that most of these diets extend beyond food, they are A lifestyle. They are generally part and parcel of broader philosophies of life.

So What makes a ‘good’ diet? well that depends what do you want to get out of your diet. And what your metrics for ‘good’ are.

Are you trying to gain muscle? Do you want to tantalize your taste-buds? Do you want longevity of life? Do you want a good quality of life? Are you aiming to increase brain power? Do you want to eat local foods ? Are you curing an infirmity / disease? Do you want to eat based on your ancestry ? Do you want to eat based on your genetics? Do you want to improve eyesight ? Do you want to look young? Do you want to improve your spiritual life? Do you want to eat foods that bring the family together ? Are you trying eat foods that save money?

You get the gist..There’s any number of ways to approach this question so it is going to be highly contextual to each individual and their metrics. So don’t feel like you need to fit into a cookie-cutter fad diet and instead ask yourself why you’re doing before making any decisions.

Let’s be real this is somewhat of a non-answer to the question , but if we reiterate here: No one is the same , we all differ to varying degrees, so naturally there is no singular utopian-esque diet to rule them all. But by all means I’m not dietician so take this with a grain of salt, a pinch of sugar, three tea-spoons of flour.. joking . This was just some food for thought, and I hope to talk more about the food world in future as it is an interesting topic.
